Box Mods: 5 Vaping kits that won’t Break the Bank

Getting a handle on box mod kits is easier than you might think. With Atomizers, RDA’s, Clearomizers, 510’s, OMS, coils, wicks, RBA’s and Cartomizers, the language of vaping might sound like complex physics (because it is complex physics). But you don’t have to be a physicist to have fun box mod vaping.

People switch from cigalikes- disposable, cigarette-like vaporisers brought from local newsagents- to mods for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s the convenience that comes with longer battery life and lifespan. For others, it’s an opportunity to experiment with types of eLiquid.

Think of mod vaping like driving a car. You don’t have to know the science of a combustion engine to drive. The best way to learn is by doing, which is why we’ve put together a short guide to get started box mod vaping alongside a list of 5 box mods starter kits for under £50.

So, let’s jump right in.

What are vape kits?

Vape kits are a term used to cover the box mod– referred to as a mech- and the atomizer or tank. Enthusiasts will rattle on for hours about the benefits combining obscure tanks with obscurer mechs but all you need to know is that one provides the power, the other makes the vapour.

What is a box mod?

To continue with the car analogy, the box mod is the engine. Instead of horse power it’s measured in watts but the principal is the same. More watts equals higher performance and a thirstier fuel tank.

At their most basic, box mods have:

  • A thread
  • Batteries (dual or single)
  • Temperature controls
  • Heads up display
  • Firing button or bar
  • Safety features

To break it down, a thread is usually 510 which refers to the fitting. This is where you attach the tank to the mod. Temperature controls vary but it’s a simple circuit that pushes out power like an accelerator pedal. The firing button is an ignition key that sends power to the tank. Safety features vary, but usually they have automatic shutoffs and short circuit protection.Smok box mod and Atomizer, Clearomizer, Cardomizer

What are tanks?

The second half of the vaping kit is where the magic happens. Atomizers are most common but there’s also cartomizers and clearomizers. For now, all you need to know about atomizers is their coils. These are measured in units of resistance known as OHMS.

A tank will contain:

  • A space to fill with eLiquid
  • Coils
  • A thread, usually 510
  • Mouth piece
  • Filters

Pushing down the firing button- or firing bar- on a mod will send power to the coil. The resistance of the coil will control how long the liquid is vaporized for, with lower resistance creating more vapour. This gives a user the opportunity to vape eLiquid with nicotine at lower concentrations in bigger clouds.

Make sure that the tank is compatible with the mod. Mods can support varying levels of coil resistance measured in OHM. Equally the thread which connects the tank to the mod has a specific fitting.

That covers everything you need to know for now. As I said before, the best way to learn about vaping is by trying it out. So, with that in mind, lets move on to 5 box mods for beginners that won’t break the bank.

Smok T-priv 220W

The T-priv is a chunky mod which aligns it with some of the earliest box-mods around. Underneath the hood there’s some nice modern tech, although the LCD screen is limited in terms of function and features.Smok T-Priv 220W Best box mod 50

What’s the deal?

Features

The stealth firing bar is a cool feature but the T-priv stands out for its sturdiness. It has a nice weight with no rattling or loose parts. Performance-wise, it goes toe to toe with Smok’s Alien kit so choosing one or the other will depend on looks and feel.

Tech

510 thread with enough space for a 26mm tank? Check. 220W of power with a temp above 300 Celsius? Check. Ability to inspire? Not quite. The T-priv is useful for starters but lacking in innovation. A solid all-rounder with patented sub-ohm coils as standard.

Specs

Wattage Output Range: 6W – 220W
Voltage Output Range: 0.5V – 9V
Minimum Atomizer Resistance: 0.06ohm
Temperature Range: 200F – 600F
Batteries: 2 x 18650 Batteries (Sold Separately)
Full Display Matrix – Rich Data Feedback
Intelligent Atomizer Recognition

Smok Alien 220W

Smok’s Alien 220W is a go to mod kit for beginners. With enough raw power to open the door to a world of eLiquids and a simple user interface this vaping kit is the gift that keeps on giving. The price keeps falling too! Today, you can pick one up for £55 which is slightly above budget but not enough to prevent me including it in this list.

Smok Alien 220W Best Box Mod 50

What’s the deal?

Features

When this mod first landed it made waves. Its lateral firing bar-although not the first product to feature one- made it stand out. Light enough to carry round in a pocket and robust enough to handle daily vaping, the Alien is still considered one of the better mods of 2018.

Tech

Hardware-wise, dual 18650 batteries fit it into the all-weekend category. Not only that, 220W of power through 0.06 to 3.0 OHM coils has some serious cloud potential. The cherry on the cake is the extra-large LED screen which makes temp controls, battery life and performance easy to read at a glance.

Specs

Requires 2 x 18650 Batteries (Sold Separately)
Size: 85 x 44 x 28.4mm
Power Range: 1W – 220W
Resistance Range: 0.1Ω – 3Ω (VW) / 0.06Ω – 2Ω (TC)
Temperature Range: 200℉ – 600℉ / 100℃ – 315℃

Revenger Kit

No-one knows what happened to Vapouresso when they were making this kit, but something- or someone- must’ve pissed them off. The Revenger is a step into the world of cloud making from the Chinese manufacturer. Their first with a 200W+ capacity.Vaporesso Revenger Best Box Mod 50

What’s the deal?

Features

The 510 pin stands out. When you want to customise- the whole point of a box-mod- a central pin fits an atomizer up to 29mm without overhang. They’ve released a mini-version as well to keep the folks over at TPD happy.

Tech

Minimum firing resistance is 0.05 OHM. A little short of Smok’s Alien series but not enough to make a serious difference. There’s a temp range of 100-300 Celsius too but tech-heads will be disappointed having to work in 5 degree increments rather than full temp control. Still, it’s a minor pitfall in a product built to rival Smok’s Alien series.

Specs

45mm Length
89mm Height
28mm Depth
5W – 220W Power Range
0.96′ OLED Display
Minimum firing resistance of 0.05Ω
Multiple Vaping Modes
Temperature Control range 100°C – 315°C / 200°F – 600°F
Requires 2 x 18650 Batteries (Sold Separately)

My personal favourite and an absolute steal at £48

Innokin cool fire IV plus

The kits covered so far are more machine gun than scalpel. But Innokin take a different approach to vaping. Combining neat workmanship with precise performance these kits are convenient to use and easy to carry.Innokin Cool Fire 4 Plus Best Mod under 50

What’s the deal?

Features

Innokin products are better suited to office workers than aficionados. Its layout is intuitive whilst the mod itself is ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip. It all adds up to a simple yet effective package.

Tech

A 70W output will be sniffed at by some but it’s capable of firing up coils from 0.1 to 3.5 OHM. The ability to adjust output by precise 0.5W increments is a major plus whilst it’s simple, iPod-like design will make it a big-hit with casual vapers.

Vaporesso Tarot Nano

When I asked Vaperground for their favourite box mod this year the Tarot Nano was top of the list. With its smart, patterned finish and convenient coil replacement feature it’s easy to see why.

Vaporesso Tarot Mini Best Box Mod 50

What’s the deal?

Features

The Tarot uses Vaporesso’s specially designed OMNI board with a pre-set for each coil type. It’s a fun feature that helps make the most of this setup with minimum expertise. The mod’s 510 thread is placed top and centre which makes it easy to fit-flush with larger tanks.

Tech

The OMNI board stands out. But we liked the Universal Coil Replacement System. Instead of replacing the whole metal casing, only the head of the coil is slotted into place. It’s a feature that’s kind on both time and money. Performance-wise, 80W might be a bit limiting for some but its standard for smaller, portable devices like this one.

Specs

Requires 1 x 18650 Battery (Sold Separately)
USB Charging
80w Maximum Output
315C/600F Output in TC Mode
TC With Ni, Ti, SS
2ml Tank
Top Fill
High-Quality Finishes

Stand out with this pocket friendly stealth vaper, available now.
